Pininfarina transforms Morgan Plus Six into a vintage speedster

Pininfarina has worked with Morgan on Project Midsummer, a sports car built upon the UK automaker’s Plus Six chassis with a fresh exterior and cabin design. Only 50 units will be made, and they are all sold out by now.

On the outside, the car is recognizable as the Plus Six despite its accentuated, sharper outlines. Two tiny visors substitute for the missing windshield, and the rear end is stretched to resemble the automotive classics of the 1930s. Despite this, the car rocks modern headlights and rides on lightweight 19-inch wheels. Pininfarina points out that a single car body like this takes around 250 hours to make by hand-molding aluminum panels.

The interior layout stays standard, but the trimming materials are new all around. The teak inserts all around aren’t made of solid pieces of wood, but rather formed from up to 120 ultra-thin layers. The coachbuilder argues that this approach ensures the longevity of the wood.

The stock Morgan Plus Six utilizes an inline six-cylinder engine from BMW rated at 340 PS (335 hp / 250 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque. Linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission, the mill accelerates the British classic from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.2 seconds. Pininfarina’s special take on it weighs 115 kilos (253 lbs) less, so it should be faster on the uptake.

According to rumors, each Midsummer costs up to U.S. $190,000. One will be present at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July.
